The Lorne Scots Regimental Association Newsletter November 2025

From the Cadet Corps

In the last edition of the Newsletter, we started off by telling about Cadet Chief Warrant Officer Waltho of 361 Cadet Corps in Fergus, and his successful completion of the Cadet Basic Parachutist Course.

CWO Waltho has now aged out and left the Cadet Corps, which is continuing to grow. But there is some sad news about the Corps.

Fergus is a bit too far away for the Regiment to provide regular support to the Corps. It is actually almost out of the Niagara Greater Toronto Area, as defined by the Army Cadet League of Ontario.

Because of these factors, the decision was made to change the Corps' affiliation to the 11th Field Regiment RCA and to take the Corps out of the Niagara-Greater Toronto area of the Army Cadet League. While it is sad to see the Corps leave the Regimental Family, we do wish them continued success as they continue to help grow and develop the youth of Fergus.

Captain David Fimio

ree

Captain Fimio, a former Commanding Officer of 1188 Cadet Corps in Oakville and 2990 Cadet Corps in Milton, has a new job. He has taken the position of DCO at 2376 the Royal Regiment of Canada Cadet Corps.

He will be taking over as CO in June. He will be continuing to work as the Regimental Liaison Officer to our Cadet Corps and as the Secretary (and enthusiastic volunteer) at the Regimental Museum.

From the Regiment

By RHQ

Over the past few months, the unit has been busy with a variety of training and operational activities. During Ex Stalwart Guardian in August, the TFLS' morale, cohesiveness and professionalism were recognized right up to Div level. Troops enjoyed mobile insertions via Chinook helicopters and participated in a Battalion-level assault on an urban ops village, providing excellent opportunities for skill development in a complex environment. Morale was high and turnout was excellent, highlighting the dedication and professionalism of our members.

September saw us catching up on ranges and adjusting leadership roles within the unit. With our full-time Unit Adjt posted out, we relied heavily on the expertise of our limited FTUC staff and officers stepping up to take on additional responsibilities. We will soon see the DCO, Maj Curry, depart for deployment, continuing the trend of leaders acting in new and challenging roles.

October and November bring joint exercises with the QOR in Meaford, including live-fire training and trench clearing. Attendance is strong, building on the momentum from summer training. The unit also looks forward to participating in Remembrance Day parades, the Sgt & WO’s Mess Dinner on 15 November, and our annual Mandatory Training Day and Soldiers’ Festive Dinner on 13 December.

Modernizing and Restructuring of the Canadian Army

ree

Lieutenant General Michael Wright, Commander of the Canadian Army, has announced a massive plan to

reshape the Army from “the one we have now to the one we need.”

The plan will shift the focus of the Army to Major Combat Operations.

The key points of the plan are to realign the army into a new structure and upgrading many capabilities to meet the demands of modern warfare.

The Regular Force will be re-grouped into a Manoeuvre Division, capable of carrying out Major Combat Operations with the Brigade as the basic manoeuvre element. This is a large step up from the current Combat team/Battle Group level.

The Reserve Force will become the Defence of Canada Division with emphasis on domestic operations and Force augmentation for deployed missions.

Training will be coordinated through a Training Division, while a Support Division will streamline and coordinate sustainment operations.

You can read more about why the re-organization is needed and what the Army wants to see happen in the link below.

From the Fusiliers

Cambrian Patrol 2025

Congratulations to the team from 5 RRF for winning a silver medal at this year’s Cambrian Patrol Exercise. Over 110 British and International teams competed.

ree

EXERCISE CAMBRIAN PATROL is delivered by Headquarters 160th (Welsh) Brigade on behalf of Commander Field Army. The Exercise has been running for over 60 years and is the British Army’s principal All Arms Patrol Exercise and is open to all three Services (Regular and Reserve), and international participants are encouraged to take part.

The Exercise is currently made up of eight phases, each of 48 hrs, over 10 days. Each patrol will cover approximately 60 km (average climb and descent is over 1000m), carrying no more than 32 kgs per person. The Exercise is designed to be arduous, and all participants must be prepared both mentally and physically for the challenge ahead.

You can see more about the Exercise and the conditions it is run in at www.cambrianpatrol.net

The Museum

By Ryan Goldsworthy

The Lorne Scots Regimental Museum (LSRM) continues to build on its major summer successes (see the September newsletter). We are currently in the process of photographing our entire permanent collection and we will begin publishing our online catalogue in 2026.

At the end of September, the museum hosted a grand War of 1812 Experience as part of Doors Open. The weekend went very well, which saw a large number of visitors and community partners come into the museum. The Historic Military Establishment of Upper Canada and Second York Regiment of Militia reenactors joined us and spent time in uniform, interacting with our visitors.

In-person visitor numbers and social media engagement have continued to grow since our reopening in May 2024. You can follow the museum on Instagram:

Museum Outreach

Our Second World War exhibition hosted at PAMA has recently concluded. The exhibit, which ran from May to October, featured the complete uniform of LCol Cecil Alexander Hamilton and was seen by over 5,000 visitors.

Our public education programming has made some major steps forward this fall. For instance, Cardinal Leger High School has booked a series of history class visits at the museum this month.

The Museum also hosted the Toronto Museum Curators (TMC) semi-annual meeting on October 18. The TMC, co-founded in 2019 by our current Director of Collections, is a professional network composed of regimental and military museum curators and directors from across the Greater Toronto Area (including RCMI and Casa Loma). The group provided many compliments on the quality of the LSRM.

The staff from the Grey and Simcoe Foresters Museum will also be visiting the museum in the near future. This is another compliment as we consulted with the Foresters Museum during the rebuild planning of our museum.

For Remembrance Week, the LSRM has curated a temporary pop-up exhibition dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Second World War. Building on our “Faces of Victory” VE Day exhibition, the new pop-up display features original objects and stories, some on loan from local Legion branches and museums. The exhibit will be on public display until November 20. Admission is by donation, and proceeds will help the museum to continue with future projects.

There are many jobs that need to be filled to keep the Museum running at the high level we hope to maintain.

One of these is a Marketing Manager. This person(s) will create and carry out plans on marketing the Museum and its events. This will include establishing contacts with local organizations, distributing information through different channels, working with internal designers and directors to create marketing visuals, and evaluating the plan’s success.

If you are interested to join our museum team or to donate any objects to the museum’s collection, please contact our Director of Collections, Ryan Goldsworthy: r.goldsworthy@lornescots.ca

For research requests, please contact Curator, Stew Sherriff: stewart.sherriff3@gmail.com
